Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is the 1862 Land Grant university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The university’s strategic plan sets ambitious goals to increase Virginia Tech’s stature as one of the nation’s leading universities. The College of Natural Resources is a vital component of Virginia Tech’s land-grant tradition with learning, discovery, and engagement programs both on- and off-campus. The college employs approximately 80 faculty and 40 staff. It enrolls approximately 475 undergraduate and 250 graduate students in internationally recognized academic programs in four departments: Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, Forestry, Geography, Wood Science and Forest Products, and the National Capital Region graduate program in natural resources. This is a fulltime Administrative/Professional Faculty position reporting to the Dean and is intended to provide the visionary leadership that will allow the college to embrace more fully the concepts of engagement as discussed in the Kellogg Commission Report: The Engaged Institution (http://www.nasulgc.org).  Since to some extent this is a new position, the incumbent will work with the Dean, the faculty, and the College’s broad base of constituencies to refine and more fully develop the responsibilities and duties of this position.

Position Responsibilities:

Advance the vision for engagement of the College in support of the University’s strategic plan.

Provide entrepreneurial leadership for the growth and development of engaged instructional, research, extension, and outreach programs within the College consistent with the broader goals of the University.

Enhance the diversity of the College’s engagement programs and activities and develop new constituencies.

Develop and maintain productive relationships within the university and serve as the College ’s link to the Director of Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) and the Vice Provost for Outreach and International Affairs.

Develop and maintain productive relationships with all external constituencies of the College.

Foster a climate, organizational structure, and leadership style that encourage all members of the College community to contribute to its goals for engagement.

Coordinate the timely submission of all required VCE and CSREES project plans and annual reports.

Direct the VCE Natural Resources Program Leadership Team.

Required Qualifications:

Earned doctoral degree and a distinguished record of scholarly activity that would qualify for the rank of full professor.

Demonstrated strength in communications and well developed interpersonal skills.

Evidence of success in engagement type activities of a university, industry, government, or an NGO.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with many constituencies.

Experience in developing, leading, and managing major programs.

Desired Qualifications:

Vision and ability to advance the engagement agenda of the College and University, which includes interdisciplinary and cross-college initiatives.

Effective planning, administration, fiscal, and personnel management.

Successful experience in, or demonstrated potential for, collaboration with industry, NGOs, government agencies, and civic groups.

An entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to explore and develop new sources of support for engagement activities.
