Washington State University seeks a senior level (Associate Scientist/Extension Specialist, E-3 or Scientist/Extension Specialist, E-4) faculty member to lead a wide-ranging water resources extension program, to develop a personal fresh water resources extension program and to conduct related, competitively funded research relevant to the needs of Washington State and the Northwest region. The position is funded 35% Agricultural Research Center and 65% WSU Extension. This is a full-time tenured position located in Pullman, WA. The tenure unit is the Department of Natural Resource Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. The desired start date is August 16, 2007, or as soon thereafter as can be arranged.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Provide leadership and coordination for extension water resources programming statewide in collaboration with county and campus-based faculty, and Federal, State an! ! d non-governmental organizations and individuals. Anticipate future water resources programming needs and seek funding for a variety of water resources programs. Travel throughout the State and region as needed to develop and sustain programming.
  • Develop and deliver an extension program that complements others in the state and region and leverages the value of existing programs.
  • Conduct successful competitively-funded research relevant to the needs of the State and region. Conduct an approved research project within the Washington Agricultural Research Center CRIS program. The area of specialty should be appropriate to the Department of Natural Resource Sciences, for example, forest or rangeland watershed management, water quality, hydrology, limnology, forest or rangeland riparian ecology, environmental engineering or a closely related field.
  • Supervise research and education of Ph.D. and M.S. students and serve on graduate student committees.
  • Participate statewide in the duties and responsibilities of University Faculty.
  • Act as a positive force for developing proactive Extension programs through: teaming with multi-disciplinary colleagues to further their program efforts; facilitating differences between groups to work toward a common goal; demonstrating a willingness to share in the work and give recognition for a job well done, acting as mentor, as appropriate, for other colleagues; and working across WSU to help maximize University Extension. 
  • Be an advocate for WSU and Extension and contribute to University, state and national recognition of WSU Extension and WSU water resources programs as essential education and applied research resources.
  • Contribute to the recognition of WSU as a premier land-grant university.
  • Contribute to the Extension profession.
  • Be knowledgeable about and promote the entire Extension program.  Contribute an accurate, consistent, and positive message about Extension to funding partners, participants, and the wider community.
  • Be committed to diversity in education programming and the workplace (including gender, culture, age, sexual orientation, education, and income).
  • Understand and carry out the principles and specific requirements of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the American Disabilities Act, the Affirmative Action Plan, and all pertinent rules and regulations.

SALARY AND COMPENSATION
 
Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Washington State University offers a competitive, comprehensive benefits package. Retirement benefits are provided through TIAA/CREF.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Required
  • An earned Ph.D. in a relevant discipline for example, forest or rangeland watershed management, water quality, hydrology, limnology, riparian ecology, environmental engineering.
  • Demonstrated breadth of knowledge and experience with freshwater resources, and a related research specialty.
  • Scholarly accomplishments and reputation sufficient for a tenured senior position in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in effective extension or other outreach activities.
  • Currently involved in a nationally-known and respected freshwater resources research program.
  • A successful record of obtaining competitive funding and managing research and outreach programs.
  • A record of generating peer-reviewed publications.
  • Proven ability to envision and realize creative, effective research and outreach programs.
  • A proven ability to work collaboratively across disciplinary lines.
 
Desired
  • Experience developing traditional and electronic extension/outreach materials.
  • Desire for professional growth in leadership and administrative responsibility.
  • Experience supervising graduate students, post-doctoral and/or technical personnel.
UNIVERSITY
