PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead Extension programs in food, agriculture and natural resource science and bring programs together to create a shared vision.
- Assure that needs of the Extension program area are assessed, program priorities are set, and University resources are made available in appropriate, effective ways.
- As Associate Dean for Extension in CFANS, serve on the Administrative team of the College and conduct the administration of Extension as delegated by the Dean of the College and the Dean of Extension.
- Mobilize program collaboration across collegiate units and facilitate productive connections between colleges, departments, and Extension field faculty and ensure accountability for Extension activities of CFANS Faculty.
- Foster an organizational and educational climate that promotes and celebrates diversity, affirmative action and inclusiveness in employment and programming.
- Provide leadership for resource generation necessary to deliver successful food, agriculture and natural resource programs.
- Provide leadership for professional development of Extension Educators and Campus Extension Faculty.
- Encourage research to support Extension program priorities and public needs.
- Assist the CFANS Dean in administering the College Extension budget. Advise the Dean of CFANS and the Dean of Extension on budget matters. Develop and implement plans for leveraging resources and oversee the management of specially funded projects.
- Ensure accountability for reporting program outcomes in collaboration with Extension to develop and implement an annual strategic plan for external relations.
- Maintain relevant state, regional, and national relationships. Maintain productive working relationships with federal, state, and local agencies; tribal partners; and other relevant public and private partners.
- Provide input into performance evaluations for campus and field Extension Educators.
- Lead Extension’s participation in land use, renewable energy and natural resource management.
- Provide leadership to internationalizing Extension programs and Extension Faculty and Educators in collaboration with the Office of International Programs for Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (IPFANS).
- Serve in various roles and assignments as requested by the Dean of CFANS and Dean of Extension.
ORGANIZATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Administrative Relationships:
This position will report administratively to the Dean of CFANS and will be programmatically accountable to the Dean of CFANS and the Dean of Extension. Performance will be evaluated annually based on the position responsibilities using CFANS and Extension performance appraisal procedures.
Appointment: Effective immediately
This is a full-time, three-year fixed term appointment in the University’s academic administrative staff category with the title of Associate Dean, class 9312. An administrative review will be conducted after the initial three-year term. Reappointment will depend on performance, organization needs, and availability of funds. For a person who is currently tenured and with appropriate qualifications, a tenured appointment in a college department may be possible.
Professional Development:
This person will be responsible for maintaining his/her professional competence.
Travel:
Travel (in-state, national, and international) is necessary to perform the responsibilities of this position. This person will be expected to provide and use a personal vehicle for travel with reimbursement for mileage and subsistence provided according to University policy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
A doctorate degree, or equivalent, in agriculture, natural resources, environment, or a closely related field is required.
Experience:
A minimum of five years of professional experience, including but not limited to, education, extension or outreach, engagement, entrepreneurship and technology in an agricultural, natural resources or environment setting is required. Demonstrated experience and understanding of technology enhanced learning is required. A demonstrated commitment to diversity is required in this position.
Skills and abilities:
Effective verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability in the following roles: team building, leadership, collaboration, facilitation, problem solving and conflict resolution.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Experience and education in agriculture, natural resources and environmental issues or concerns.
2. Ability to connect research, teaching, and extension to Food, Agri culture, and Natural Resources needs in Minnesota.
3. Successful experience in creating and maintaining relationships with key Agriculture, Food, Natural Resources stakeholders.
4. Demonstrated ability to garner resources to develop and deliver Extension programs.
5. Ability to lead and motivate staff resulting in food, agriculture and natural resource programs that meet public and producer needs.
6. Ability to provide leadership for Extension Faculty and staff development.
7. Experience in areas related to land use, renewable energy and natural resource management.
8. Experience in capital planning
SALARY:
Commensurate with career experience and education.
