Citizen Environmental Monitoring in Appalachia: building an environmental monitoring program for validity, impact, and sustainability
The Rural Action Appalachian Forest Resource Center (AFRC) and SouthernAppalachian Man and the Biosphere (SAMAB) will be holding a conference,Citizen Environmental Monitoring in Appalachia: building an environmental monitoring program for validity, impact, and sustainability in Bristol, VA, November 4-6, 2004.We aim to bring together people from across Appalachia to learn aboutthe usefulness of citizen environmental monitoring (CEM) to promoteenvironmental awareness in communities and achieve various stakeholders'goals. Environmental data gathered by volunteers should answer questionsof interest to the community and can be used for a variety of purposesincluding setting background levels, establishing environmental trends,raising a red flag of possible problem areas, educating communities, andinfluencing policy and management practices.This conference will address the use of volunteers to monitor waterquality as well as the presence and abundance of invasive and exoticspecies. In addition, discussion will focus on the role volunteers canplay in monitoring forest health and measuring how sustainably theforest is being managed. Target audiences include land trusts,watershed groups, land managers, government agencies, communityorganizations, researchers, environmental educators, recreation groups,volunteers, foundations and policy makers.
