3rd International Fire Ecology and Management Congress
(San Diego, CA, from
Nov 13, 2006 12:00 AM to
Nov 17, 2006 12:00 AM)
-
The Third Fire Ecology and Management Congress provides a week long focus on the science and technology that are the basis for the management of wildland fire. The theme of the plenary session is “Changing fire regimes: Context and consequences,” featuring invited speakers who will further explore this topic that is so significant for fire management. Concurrent sessions and a poster session will cover a wide range of topics and issues, including both contributed papers and special sessions developed on specific themes, all with a central focus of fire ecology and management. Topics will range from fire effects on vegetation and wildlife, fire in a landscape context, fuels management, and post fire rehabilitation, to the latest technology for predicting and monitoring fire. An exhibit will showcase new products, technology, and tools. The Congress is being held in southern California because the fires of fall 2003 are still fresh in people’s minds. It provides a forum for discussion of what we have learned from them, and whether catastrophic fires are more or less likely to occur in the future. The complexity of the wildland fire management task continues to grow, as fire regimes appear to be changing, acres burned with uncharacteristically severe fire increasing, wildland fire suppression costs escalating, and an enhanced program emphasis on fuels management on Federal lands, with considerable support and oversight from Congress and the public. Wildland fire management is a multi-faceted program. It's planning and implementation requires knowledge and experience in fire, ecology, and fuels, blended with an understanding of people and communities. The Congress provides an opportunity for fire and land managers, scientists, resource professionals, agency administrators, local government representatives, consultants, university staff, students, and the concerned public to learn from the specialists, and from each other. The Congress allows us to learn about scientific developments, discover new technologies, exchange and build upon ideas, and explore the relevancy of problems, issues and solutions from other parts of the continent and the world.TopSpecial Sessions in Preparation• Advances in fire climatology: Using modern and paleofire data to understand long-term and broad-scale fire regime changes in the western US• Air quality regulations and wildland fire: Issues and challenges• Building the support you need: Incorporating education and communications into fire management programs• Changing fire dynamics and ecosystem responses in tropical vegetation• Changing spatiotemporal dynamics of fire regimes in the Appalachian Mountains• Chronology of 2003 San Diego wildfires: What happened, what we learned, and what we have done• Do past management activities compound the effects of fire exclusion in western forests?• Ecological consequences of large fires• Effects of fire and fire surrogate treatments for ecological restoration• Effects of fire on ecosystems - Fire and nonnative invasive plant species• Fire and dynamics of semi-arid and arid landscapes• Fire ecology and fuels management collaboration: The good the bad and the ugly• Fire in boreal forests• Fire management under projected future climate regimes• Fire mediated changes in Alaska boreal forest• Fire regimes and fire effects in Mexican ecosystems• LANDFIRE: Scientific foundations for multi-scale fire fuels and risk assessments across the U. Registration is now open for Advancing Renewable Energy: An American Rural Renaissance, a national renewable energy conference that will be hosted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on October 10-12, 2006, at Americas Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The conference will focus on achieving goals outlined in President Bushs Advanced Energy Initiative (AEI), which seeks to change the way we power our cars, homes and businesses through the use of alternative energy sources. "We must work together to keep America competitive by expanding sustainable, market-driven, domestic energy sources," USDA Secretary Mike Johanns said from Kazakhstan where he is conducting a trade mission. "The October conference will build upon the Presidents vision for overcoming our energy challenges and will create new opportunities in rural communities." Advancing Renewable Energy is designed to help create and strengthen partnerships and strategies necessary to accelerate commercialization of renewable energy industries and distribution systems, the crux of President Bushs AEI. The conference will specifically focus discussions on biomass, wind and solar research and commercialization. USDA and DOE expect the conference to identify critical pathways, and to make recommendations to help accelerate renewable energy technology development. The conference also will examine incentives to help reduce risk for investors and developers in the marketplace and will review challenges of developing new distribution systems. Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman said, "Never has reducing our dependence on foreign oil been a more pressing issue. We are hopeful this conference will identify major impediments and critical pathways to get more domestically grown, renewable energy sources out of the laboratory and into consumers hands as soon as possible." Attendance is open to the public. Anyone involved with, or interested in, renewable energy is encouraged to attend, including transportation, large- and small-scale farming, finance and investment officials, as well as academia, and federal, state, government and elected officials. All attendees must register for the conference, including press, who may attend without charge. Forests in Florida are rapidly changing as a result of increased urbanization and disturbance from hurricanes. Urban forest managers are expected to know: where is the forest located, what is the composition of the forest, what is the quality of the forest, and what are the impacts of urbanization and disturbance? The first step to answering these questions is to have an urban forest inventory. There are an array of new tools and software available to aid managers in answering these questions and this symposium brings together a suite of experts to share how some of these tools have been successfully deployed to help manage urban forest systems. The Urban Forest Inventory Systems Symposium is appropriate for anyone involved in urban forest management, including landscape architects, civil engineers, parks and recreation managers, municipal GIS managers, urban foresters and arborists. IUFRO 3.08 Conference: Improving Triple Bottom Line Returns from Small-scale Forestry
(Leyte, Philippines, from
Jun 17, 2007 12:00 AM to
Jun 21, 2007 12:00 AM)
-
This conference focuses on how the economic, social and environmental returns from small-scale forestry can be improved. In many countries, the economic variability of forestry is, or has been, under threat and landholders and organisations are looking for ways to improve the financial returns to growers. In many regions where small-scale forestry is an important land-use, the declining profitability of small-scale forestry is a crucial issue for which many people are seeking answers. A primary focus of the conference will be to address the critical issue of how financial returns from small-scale forestry can be improved. In addition, there has been a major shift in the way many landholders view their forests, with many now managing them for multiple benefits, with a focus on non-timber benefits such as hunting, aesthetics, wild foods and biodiversity. For many landholders, their small-scale forests also provide an important link to their history or have cultural significance. The conference will also explore how these other non-timber benefits or returns from small-scale forests can be improved – both to the individual and to the broader community. The conference will be hosted by Leyte State University in conjunction with the School of Natural and Rural Systems Management at the The University of Queensland.
