DES MOINES, June 8, 2006-Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today released a conservation program analysis paper authored by USDA economists. This is the second in a series of papers intended to provide factual information about specific topics and continue the national discussion about policy alternatives in preparation for the 2007 Farm Bill. Print Publications

A recently completed South-wide study using GRITS growth projection model provides a forecast of Georgias timberland inventories, removals and future growth. It reveals that the forested area of the state could remain at virtually the same as current levels through 2010 with a reduction in softwood inventories but essentially no change in hardwood inventories. Availability of fiber supplies is a concern because of changing landowner attitudes, increasing harvesting restrictions and the dedication of forest acreage for other purposes. The amount of regeneration of the forest resource that occurs through planting or natural regeneration will predicate future timber supplies for Georgia. ...(Read More)

Previous research indicates that a major factor in the Deltas wetlands problem is the lack of bottomland hardwoods.
