Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Dean of the College of Forest Resources/Director of the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State University. Mississippi State University is a comprehensive land grant doctoral institution established in 1878. Its main campus is in Starkville, Mississippi, a community of 20,000 located in northeast Mississippi approximately equal distance from Jackson, Birmingham, and Memphis. Mississippi State is the states largest university with an enrollment of over 16,000 students. The state has extensive forest, wildlife, fisheries and other natural resources that account for a large percentage of the employment and economic activities in the state.

The College of Forest Resources is one of nine degree-granting schools and colleges at Mississippi State University. The Dean/Director is the principal administrator within the College and Research Center and the principal representative of these units and the University to the forestry, forest products, and wildlife and fisheries communities. In this capacity, the Dean and Director is responsible for: planning, policies, and procedures for comprehensive teaching, research, and service programs in the Departments of Forestry, Forest Products and Wildlife and Fisheries;  budgetary matters, including the preparation of annual budget requests; and representing Research Center funding needs to committees of the Mississippi Legislature and College funding needs to the Provost. This leadership position is also responsible for the College and Research Center development activities, which are undertaken in cooperation with the Mississippi State University Development Foundation. The Dean/Director reports to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Mississippi State University on academic matters and to the Vice President of the Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine on research matters. Faculty members hold joint appointments in the College and the Forest and Wildlife Research Center; the latter is a separately budgeted unit.

The College offers the B.S. degree with majors in Forestry, Forest Products or Wildlife and Fisheries. All baccalaureate curricula options in forestry, forest products and wildlife and fisheries are either accredited by, or meet certification requirements of, their respective professional societies. Graduate programs leading to the M.S. or Ph.D. degree are offered. Faculty interests cover a broad spectrum of sub-disciplines within each degree program. Associated units include the Spatial Information Technologies Laboratory, Institute for Furniture Manufacturing and Management, the Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Berryman Institute, and the Human Dimensions and Conservation Law Enforcement Laboratory. The Research Center maintains cooperative research relationships with other campus units and various state and federal agencies and private organizations. Staffing of the College and Research Center includes 51 faculty or faculty equivalents, 53 research and administrative personnel and 27 technical and support personnel. Enrollment is approximately 250 undergraduate and 110 graduate students. Facilities include 236,000 square feet of classroom, laboratory and related space; 12,000 acres of forest land; and extensive wildlife holding facilities and other field installations.

Candidates for the position must hold an earned doctorate, with at least one degree in forestry, forest products, wildlife, fisheries or a closely related natural resource field; appropriate academic and administrative experience; and a professional background and credentials appropriate for tenure and rank of professor in one of the departments of the College of Forest Resources. The Dean/Director must be an effective representative of the College and Research Center and the professions they embrace both on campus and with other institutions, professional organizations, state and federal agencies, the Mississippi Legislature, natural resources industries, and the general public. Candidates must also provide evidence of administrative skills and effective leadership; demonstrate a commitment to effective undergraduate, graduate, and professional education, and to supporting both applied and basic research; and have a sustained record of scholarship and a history of contributions to professional organizations.
