Extension Wildlife Specialist
Mission: The OSU Department of Forestry discovers and disseminates knowledge of forest ecosystems and their management to meet the needs and values of society, and to sustain their function, diversity, and productivity.
Description: This is a full-time, eleven-month, tenure-track position, approximately 75% extension and 25% research. The extension appointment is in the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, and the research appointment is in the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES). This position reports directly to the Head of the Department of Forestry.
Responsibilities:
Extension Component: The Extension Wildlife Specialist will provide leadership in planning, implementing and continually evaluating a state-wide wildlife extension education program. Program emphasis will include both the economic and intrinsic values of game and non-game wildlife resources. Audiences will include timber, range, and farm landowners and managers, wildlife interest groups, and the general public. An important component of the position will be youth education through the State 4-H program.
1. Integration of natural resources planning and management as a part of overall forest and range management activities.
2. Evaluation of the feasibility and profitability of wildlife-related enterprises on forest, range, and farm lands.
3. Provide curricula, training and support for Extension professional field staff.
4. Continuing education programs for extension personnel and wildlife, forestry, and range management professionals.
5. Public education regarding beneficial relationships associated with sound forest, range, and wildlife habitat management and wildlife resources.
6. 4-H and other youth program development and support in wildlife and habitat management.
7. Maintain professional liaison and develop cooperative programs with academic colleagues, industry, and state, federal, and private natural resource management agencies.
8. Serve on Departmental, Division and University committees appropriate to interests, responsibilities, and organizational mission.
9. Prepare annual goals and objectives, and participate in the yearly appraisal and development process.
Research Component: Establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program in the general area of natural resources management and wildlife, responsive to the needs of the State of Oklahoma and the region, and in cooperation with Forestry faculty and other natural resources professionals.
Department support will be provided in a collaborative research, teaching, and extension environment. The individual is expected to participate in collaborative activities with appropriate Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (DASNR) Second Century Initiative Teams, such as 21st Century Plant Enterprises (alternative and sustainable management systems), Natural Resources -- Quality and Management (wildlife stewardship and management, forest resource management, value-added enterprises), 4-H -- Developing Community Leaders (environmental education and recreation, habitat management), and Economically Strong and Empowered Communities (recreation and tourism, profitable wildlife-related enterprises).
Qualifications:
1. A Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Ecology. M.S. degree in Wildlife Management or Science or a broad foundation in Wildlife Management. B.S. degree in Wildlife, Forestry, or Range Management or other biological science.
2. A combination of courses selected from the areas of mammalogy, ornithology, herpetology, animal ecology, upland game management, waterfowl management, population dynamics, habitat analysis, and animal pathology. Significant additional coursework in the areas of forestry, range management, botany, and plant sciences.
3. Demonstrated ability to conduct educational programs in natural resources management. Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
4. Ability and desire to work closely and cooperatively with the Forestry faculty and other natural resources professionals to develop and maintain an active research program, to include publishing in leading scientific journals. A demonstrated interest and ability to seek and secure extramural funding to support research, and deliver quality educational opportunities to state-wide clientele.
Preferred:
1. Extension or equivalent youth and adult education experience.
2. Academic or practical experience in forestry, range, or wildlife management.
Employment Conditions: The position will be filled by February 28, 2006, or as soon thereafter as a qualified candidate is available. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
