Assistant/Associate Extension Professor, Assistant/Associate Professor, and Small Woodland Management Specialist
University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension and School of Forest Resources are seeking applications for Assistant/Associate Extension Professor and Assistant/Associate Professor of Small Woodlot Management. This is a full-time, fiscal year, non-continuing contract / non-tenure faculty position. This faculty position will provide leadership for Cooperative Extension’s forest management education program, with an emphasis on issues affecting the ownership and sustainability of small woodlands in southern and coastal Maine. The position is a joint appointment between Cooperative Extension and the School of Forest Resources, and includes 60% Extension and 40% research and/or teaching responsibilities. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications, experience and the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Responsibilities:
Extension (60%): The successful candidate will work in partnership with Extension faculty and staff, and statewide partners to develop and conduct educational programs for small woodland owners, professional foresters, and others on key issues affecting small woodlot management and estate planning in southern and coastal Maine. An important part of this position will be serving as a statewide resource for timely and relevant information on small woodlot management for faculty, professional and classified staff within Cooperative Extension, state agencies, and professional foresters.
Applied Research and/or Teaching (40%): The research/teaching portion of the appointment can either be all teaching or all research, or a balance between the two depending on the capabilities and career goals of the successful candidate. Expectations of an applied research appointment would include developing research projects as part of the Family Forests Program in the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests (CRSF) that address key issues and challenges affecting small woodland management and sustainability in southern and coastal Maine. Expectations of a teaching appointment would include teaching (or team teaching) one or more upper-division course(s) in the successful candidate’s field of expertise as it relates to small woodlands or other forest resource fields that support the curriculum within the School of Forest Resources.
Qualifications required: A Ph.D. with specialization in forest resources or closely related field is required. Expertise in forest management (especially small woodlands) as evidenced by coursework, research, teaching, and/or professional experience. Demonstrated ability to design, deliver and evaluate outreach and campus-based educational programs. Applied research experience in forestry resources and/or ability to teach university-level courses in forest resources or related field. Applicants must be eligible to accept employment in the United States at the time the appointment is made.
Position Location: The University of Maine (www.umaine.edu) is located in Orono, a small university town bounded by the Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers. The campus is eight miles north of Bangor, a commercial center for Maine and the Atlantic Provinces of Canada. The Bangor Region is centrally located in the state, providing nearby access to mountains, forests, parks, rivers, lakes, and the coast.
