Assistant Professor of Arboriculture
The Forest Resources Management Program in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources at West Virginia University is seeking to fill a nine-month, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will begin August 16, 2010. Summer salary may be available initially in order to establish a research program contingent upon availability of funds.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include the following: 1) will be required to teach two undergraduate urban forest management courses in urban tree appraisal and risk analysis and a capstone course in urban forest management, one graduate level course in their area of expertise, supervise student summer interns each academic year, and direct the efforts to develop an undergraduate major in urban forestry/arboriculture, 2) planning and developing support for a research program focused on the management of urban and community forests, and 3) develop service activities focused on public and private greenspace and city and other public tree boards of West Virginia. The incumbent will work closely with the Cooperative Extension Service at WVU in developing applied research projects and service-related activities. The incumbent will be expected to attract and mentor graduate students, to acquire extramural funding, and to publish research results in refereed research journals.
Qualifications: The incumbent must possess an earned doctorate in urban community forestry or allied fields of urban planning, forest health, forest pathology, or ornamental horticulture. At least one degree from a Society of American Foresters accredited professional forest management degree program is required. A strong background in spatial analysis, International Society of Arboriculture certification and experience with the tree care industry is highly desired. Demonstrated ability to communicate with students, city tree boards, the general public, governmental organizations and other scientists is essential.
Program: The Forest Resources Management program at WVU is one of four program areas in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. The program offers degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The B.S. in Forest Resources Management is accredited by the Society of American Foresters. The applicant should be willing to work closely with the forest and natural resource industries within the state and offers numerous opportunities for collaboration between faculty and research staff in the forest industries in West Virginia.
Location: The West Virginia University main campus is located in Morgantown, a small city of 45,000 in the Appalachian Mountains on West Virginia’s northern border adjacent to Pennsylvania.
