Position Description: This is a grant-funded position in theDepartment of Entomology that will oversee the invasive species,biological, and taxonomic aspects of the Bugwood Network, www.bugwood.org, under the directsupervision of Dr. G. Keith Douce, Professor of Entomology, College ofAgricultural & Environmental Sciences, Dr. David J. Moorhead,Professor of Silviculture, Warnell School of Forest Resources, andCharles T. Bargeron, Technology Coordinator, Bugwood Network. TheBugwood Network is a technology-based working group focusing ondeveloping and providing information on forest health, invasive andexotic species, entomology, silviculture, agriculture, and naturalresource management. The Network develops and serves 12 web sites and 3image archives receiving over 20 million hits a year.
Qualifications: MS or higher in one of the following or relatedfields: entomology, forestry, ecology, weed science, botany, and plantpathology. Cross-discipline experience with focus on natural resourcespreferred. Ability and experience using Windows-based computers andMicrosoft Office software, database programs and utilizing the Internetas a research tool is desired. Candidates must have good communicationskills, both written and verbal and the ability to work independentlyand with others at local, regional, national and international levels.A thorough understanding of scientific nomenclature and systematics isrequired. Experience working with Invasive or Regulated speciespreferred as well as experience and/or interest in nature and macrophotography.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: This position will serveas the biological project coordinator for all Bugwood Network projectsincluding expanding development of invasive species programs andprojects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for classification ofinformation and images into the taxonomic database system that runs theForestry Images (www.forestryimages.org),Invasive.org (www.invasive.org),Insect Images (www.insectimages.org)and IPM Images (www.ipmimages.org)web sites. This will involve working closely with photographers andscientists and other Bugwood Network personnel to insure informationintegrity, classifying images relating to forest health, insects,plants, diseases, silviculture, agricultural and natural resourcemanagement into taxonomic and subject categories for entry into theimage archive database.
Additional duties include serving as the data processing assistant tothe Georgia state survey coordinator for the Cooperative AgriculturalPest Survey (CAPS) program sponsored by the USDA Animal Plant HealthInspection Service, Plant Protection and Quarantine (APHIS-PPQ) (www.gacaps.org).
The candidate will be required to deliver presentations to groupsincluding professional organizations at state, regional, and nationallevels. Some out-of-town and overnight travel will be required. Currentgrant funded projects are with the USDA Forest Service, and USDAAPHIS-PPQ.
Location: Coastal Plain Experiment Station on the TiftonCampus of the University of Georgia in Tifton, GA. The campus providesagricultural and environmental research, outreach and instruction withalmost 100 UGA scientists working with researchers of the USDAAgricultural Research Service. Tifton, one of the "100 Best Small Townsin America" is located 180 miles south of Atlanta, and 240 miles northof Orlando and has a county population of 40,000.
