SIU Carbondale invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Dean is the chief administrative and academic officer of the College of Agricultural Sciences and reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The successful candidate is expected to bring a vision for the future which will inspire his/her colleagues to pursue a higher standard of excellence for teaching and scholarship. S/he should also encourage and lead the faculty, students, and staff to greater academic excellence.

Essential Job Functions: serve as an officer of the University and a member of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Deans' Council; serve as College spokesperson within the University, as well as with off-campus constituencies; procure external support and funding from industry and governmental agencies; develop an active external fundraising program; effectively allocate resources in support of academic excellence, ensuring academic planning, departmental budgets, and fiscal plans fit within the approved budget framework; encourage excellence in teaching, externally-funded research, scholarly activity, intellectual property development, and service; respond to the needs of students and develop programs for their recruitment, retention, advisement, placement, and the creation of internships; participate in program reviews and revisions, ensuring undergraduate and graduate programs conform to and exceed the standards of accrediting agencies for the College; provide leadership in personnel actions relating to recruitment, salaries, appointment, retention, tenure, retirement, termination, etc.; conduct annual faculty performance evaluations; organize an upgrade of the College's technical infrastructure; and promote minority and female recruitment and retention, encouraging an environment of diversity that advances the institution's policies on inclusive excellence and anti-discrimination.
Qualifications:
1. a doctorate in an appropriate discipline relative to the College
2. Three years of professional experience in academic leadership at the level of department chairperson or higher, or comparable professional experience
3. an outstanding publication record
4. an extensive record of success in securing external funding
5. a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service consistent with the expectations of a tenured Professor at a Doctoral Research-Extensive University
6. academic administrative and leadership experience (budget, planning, personnel, student matters, promotion and tenure review, program reviews and/or specialized accreditations) at the level of department chair or position of similar responsibility
7.excellent organizational and communication skills
8. the ability to articulate effectively the College's mission
9. demonstrated ability to develop and sustain collegial and productive relationships with on- and off campus constituencies, funding sources, and fundraising sources
10. a commitment to high standards in education, cultural diversity, and equal opportunity
