Director of Operations, Cloquet Forestry Center, University of Minnesota
The University of Minnesota is currently accepting applications for a tenured associate or full professor to serve as Director of Operations at their Cloquet Forestry Center. The CFC is a research forest located in northeastern Minnesota. Interdisciplinary thrusts include forest productivity, climate change, forest protection, forest ecology, cold climate housing, wildlife ecology, recreation resource management and silvicultural systems research. The CFC houses the Minnesota Tree Improvement Cooperative, the Sustainable Forests Education Cooperative and the Cloquet Regional Extension Office. The CFC is also home to annual field courses offered by the Department of Forest Resources and the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology.

Essential Job Functions:
Director of Operations: serve as the on-site administrator of the Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC) and the Hubachek Wilderness Research Center (HWRC); serve as a member of the college's leadership council and executive committee; manage and supervise personnel, physical resources, annual budget, and long-term strategic planning of CFC and HWRC; be an effective advocate and ambassador of CFC and HWRC to the University of Minnesota (UMN), CFANS, industry, government, conservationists, and private landowners; assist faculty and staff professional development and coordination; facilitate research, education, and outreach programs; and grow the CFC and HWRC programs through research and funding
Associate or Full Professor: develop a superior research and outreach program in silviculture or closely related area with application to major problems in applied forest ecology and management; seeking and securing research funding from agency and industry sources within the state and via national and other competitive grants programs; develop, lead and/or participate in teaching a specialized or broad course or courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; encourage the growth of instruction by other CFANS and University programs that can take advantage of the CFC assets; participate in faculty governance, where appropriate, and provide leadership to outreach activities of the CFC, Department of Forest Resources and CFANS statewide.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. a Ph.D. in forest resources science and / or closely related natural resources or environment area; at least one degree in forestry
2. evidence of professional distinction and national or international recognition in a relevant field warranting tenure in the Department of Forest Resources
3. strong forestry, forest science and related natural resources background
4. demonstrated experience and success in designing and conducting research
5. demonstrated success in refereed journal publication, applied research communications and obtaining research support
6. demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in program planning, budgeting administration, supervision of personnel, faculty and staff development, program execution capability and oral and written communication skills
7. demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and advocacy of the scientific process related to forest and related natural resources research
8. demonstrated, experience, ability and interest in teaching
9. demonstrated knowledge and/or experienced in working within the political and legislative process to strengthen forest and related natural resources research initiatives
10. demonstrated ability to develop and sustain effective communications and relationships with diverse stakeholders including their organizational entities and communities
11. a commitment to serving traditionally underrepresented and culturally diverse groups
12. willingness and ability to travel within the state, region and beyond as appropriate
Preferred Qualifications:
1. a focus on some aspect of silviculture and /or forest ecology, health, soils, harvesting or related operations as they affect forest resources including forest health and productivity, habitat, recreation and water resources
2. ability to identify and solve problems important to forest management
3. ability to facilitate and encourage innovative and multidisciplinary team approaches to education, research and outreach programs
4. a record of incorporating diverse perspectives in teaching, research and outreach
5. Interest and experience in advising graduate students and participating in undergraduate and graduate instruction as appropriate, notably in experiential learning.
