The Executive Vice President (EVP) is the chief staff executive of the Mississippi Forestry Association (MFA), a non-profit organization that serves as the voice of forestry in Mississippi. MFA’s mission is to represent the diverse interests of Mississippi’s forest resource communities. MFA’s values are: landowner rights, member prosperity, environmental stewardship, sustainable growth, and ethical practices.
MFA has approximately 2800 members, with over 1000 timberland owners, 700 individuals and 400 hunt clubs. Members are foresters, loggers, companies that own pulp and paper mills, sawmills, and other wood using facilities; and timber investment management organizations. MFA also has an affiliation with 62 independent County Forestry Associations. MFA’s office is located in downtown Jackson and its website is http://msforestry.net/.
The EVP reports to the MFA President, a member who serves a one year term in a four year leadership sequence. The EVP also works closely with MFA’s other officers: the First and Second Vice President, and Past President. The EVP and Officers are guided in decision making by the Executive committee, a 10-member board that meets every two months, and a Board of Directors that meets three times annually.
The EVP’s primary duties are to: Be an effective advocate for forestry in Mississippi Support MFA members Manage government affairs Provide oversight of MFA communications, including the quarterly Tree Talk magazine, the digital Voice of Forestry newsletter, and MFA’s website and social media. Supervises a staff of 5 full time and part time employees Manage contractors who provide accounting, lobbying, information technology, and personnel services.
Minimum qualifications are a baccalaureate degree and 5 years of experience in forestry or a natural resources field. The EVP must be creative, self-motivated, and passionate about Mississippi forestry. The EVP must be an effective communicator and problem solver. The EVP must work successfully with legislators and state agency personnel on issues that affect Mississippi forestry. Prior employment in a nonprofit organization and experience in government affairs are desirable, but not required. Salary is negotiable and depends on qualifications and experience.
