JOB PURPOSE
Extension Agent - Assistant Forestry
This position is based in the Jasper County Extension Office and serves Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Colleton and Hampton. In cooperation with the county staffs and Extension Forestry and Wildlife Specialists, the agent plans and implements forestry educational programs for landowners. Emphasis is placed on encouraging reforestation or harvested lands, generating interest in regeneration planning prior to harvesting, reforesting unproductive forest areas, fostering better management of existing forests, and improving timber marketing practices.
THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION FOR 12 MONTHS 100% TIME
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Arrange for and carry out forestry and wildlife educational programs including tours, workshops, demonstration areas, personal visits, and teaching techniques.
- Provide leadership for the formation and regular utilization of Extension Advisory Committees and educational delivery groups such as county landowner association.
- Develop a cooperative working relationship with other resource people and involve them in forestry education programs.
- Arrange for continuous media activities on forest management and regeneration using newsletters, newspapers, radio, television and local commercial and industrial organizations.
- Conduct inservice training for county staffs on a regular basis.
- Perform other related duties.
- Participate in affirmative action and civil rights Extension activities and other report procedures in designated areas of responsibility.
- Responsible for financial matters in assigned areas of
responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: B.S. Degree in Forestry.
Preferred in addition to the minimum: Master's degree in Forestry.
Experience is preferred: Two (2) years' Extension or relevant experience with Master's Degree; 3 years' Extension relevant experience with a B.S. Degree with supervisor recommendation. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to plan, conduct and evaluate programs in given area of expertise. Must have a complete knowledge of the technical subject matter in assigned area of major responsibility with the demonstrated practical ability to teach clientele and Extension personnel. Should be career oriented and able to listen and communicate freely both orally and in writing. Successful work experience and a planned continuous professional improvement program will positively influence this employee's ability to handle this position responsibly.
