POSITION: Assistant Professor, Department of Forestry,University of KentuckyQUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. degree with specialization in ForestHydrology and/or Forest Watershed Management. Educational backgroundand/or experience in forestry required.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Research (60%), Teaching (40%). Candidates aresought with demonstrated research interest and expertise in foresthydrology and watershed processes, with recognition of the importanceof the interactions between biological and physical processes. Researchareas of interest include hydrologic processes in relation to timberharvest and forest management operations, hillslope hydrologicprocesses, watershed hydrology, hydrologic processes in constructedsystems, hyporheic zone processes, and watershed transport and cyclingof carbon, nutrients and pollutants. Significant research opportunitiesexist as a result of the recently enacted Kentucky Forest ConservationAct that requires implementation of forestry best management practices.These include assessment of the effectiveness of forestry BMPs asrelated to water quality, stream biota and riparian zone functions andongoing research projects in BMP implementation and effectiveness areavailable for the successful candidate. The successful candidate willbe expected to conduct an extramurally funded research program in thearea of expertise, as well as contribute to the analysis andcontinuance of an existing long-term hydrologic data set from theUniversity of Kentucky research forest. Collaboration with otherforestry and natural resource specialists is strongly encouraged.Teaching responsibilities include an undergraduate course in forestwatershed management and contribution to the senior capstone course inforest management. Other possible teaching responsibilities includecontribution to a curriculum in natural resource conservation and agraduate course in the area of expertise.
RANK AND SALARY: Tenure-track, full-time, 12-month appointment;rank open. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualificationsand experience.
THE DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY: The Department of Forestry is one ofeleven academic departments in the College of Agriculture. Departmentalactivities include undergraduate and graduate instruction in forestryand natural resources, research and extension programs. TheDepartments facilities on the University of Kentucky campus inLexington are supplemented by the Robinson Forest, a 15,000 acreresearch forest in eastern Kentucky that has eight gauged watershedsand field technician support. Laboratory and technician support is alsoprovided at the Lexington campus. Opportunities also exist forcooperative relationships with other departments in the University, theUSDA Forest Service, the National Park Service, and natural resourceagencies in the state.
