Implementation ofthe Affirmative Action program of the University of Florida is required.<br><br>Teaching responsibilities: The individual will assume teaching dutiesin a dynamic on-going natural resources conservation program on theMilton campus. Teaching responsibilities will focus on thesocio-economic dimensions of the curriculum to enhance and bringbalance to the strong biophysical science competencies now present.Initial course responsibilities will include Forest Management, NaturalResources Policy, Integrated Natural Resources Management. Othercourses may be added depending upon the needs of the curriculum and thespecific background of the individual hired into the position. Theindividual is expected to participate in graduate education, chairgraduate committees, and supervise thesis and dissertation research inareas that strengthen the programmatic responsibilities of the facultymember. <br><br>Extension responsibilities: The faculty member is expected to develop astrong program to assist private forestland owners in making managementdecisions that lead to profitable outcomes from environmentally soundstewardship. The faculty member will support county faculty byorganizing and conducting in-service training programs, developingpublications and other media for program delivery and assisting inworkshops, field days and seminars in forest management. These shouldaddress management decision-making that incorporates the economics offorest practices; multiple products; tax, incentive and regulatorypolicies; and alternative land use options. In addition the facultymember will assist county and other state faculty in establishingappropriate demonstrations that will enhance both academic courses andExtension educational programs. These, when possible, will also involvecooperators.<br><br>BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in forestry with specialization in forestmanagement is required. A strong teaching and extension background andan ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing withscientific, producer, and student audiences, and willingness to workwith an interdisciplinary team of scientists are also essential.Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values ofexcellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.<br><br>BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This position is part of a satellite teachingprogram which has been established at the WFREC and is a collaborativeeffort between the University of Florida, Pensacola Junior College(PJC) and the University of West Florida. This unique teaching program,located at PJC in Milton (approximately 20 miles northeast ofPensacola, FL), allows students to pursue a B.S. degree in NaturalResource Conservation, Environmental Horticulture, and TurfgrassScience. In addition to excellent facilities at the Milton campus, a650 acre research station is located about 12 miles north of Miltonnear Jay, FL. Research is conducted in forestry, agroforestry, naturalresource management, turf, landscape, forage and weed sciences,floriculture and nematology. WFREC faculty and staff are dedicated tointerdisciplinary research, teaching, and extension programs that meetthe needs of local clientele and could have statewide nation-wide aswell as international impact.&nbsp; The location of WFREC allowsfamilies to enjoy the advantages of rural living while being within 15minutes of Pensacola, one of Floridas major cities.<br><br>Florida has 16 million acres of forestland, comprising a diversity ofecosystems ranging from cypress swamps to mesic hardwoods, pineflatwoods and xeric sandhill oak/pine forests. Nearly half of theforestland of the state is owned by private, non-industrial landowners;one third is owned by forest industries and the remainder is publicforests. Management of these forestlands poses challenges andopportunities due to their unique flora and fauna, rapid urbanization,access to international markets, a favorable environment for plantgrowth, and a strong demand for the economics, environmental and socialproducts of Floridas forests. The Florida lumber, wood products andpaper industry employs over 35,000, many of whom work in northwestFlorida.<br><br>The School of Forest Resources and Conservation is an academic unitwith the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) of theUniversity of Florida. Through the IFAS/College of Agricultural andLife Sciences, the School offers a Bachelor of Science degree in ForestResources and Conservation (BSFRC) with a Natural ResourcesConservation specialization which is jointly supported by theDepartment of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation with whom the Schoolhas close working relationships. The School also offers graduateprograms (MFRC, MS and PhD) and cooperates closely with the College ofNatural Resources and Environment.<br><br>The University of Florida, a member of the Association of AmericanUniversities, offers more than 100 different majors, and enrolls over44,000 students. The new program at PJC-Milton campus is one of aselect few academic programs offered at locations outside Gainesville.PJC and the nearby cooperating University of West Florida enroll morethan 25,000 students in a comprehensive academic environment.
