Marketing & Media Manager

The Marketing and Media Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of social marketing and media programs to increase AFF’s visibility and to solidify relationships with our networks and key constituencies.    This is a new position that includes a mix of social media, media relations and marketing responsibilities.


Essential Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
The primary functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  •  Builds and implements social marketing programs to help raise awareness of the value of private forests and environmental education to help increase allegiance and support to AFF
  • Develops social media strategies that integrate with traditional marketing and media communication plans to drive traffic to AFF’s website and social networking sites
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with top bloggers and other community groups in conservation, forestry and environmental education
  • Monitors AFF’s social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and program related on-line communities
  • Promotes and fosters staff and volunteer participation/use of AFF’s social media tools
  • Manages media data base, builds media lists, writes press releases and pitches media (both traditional and on-line); oversees website newsroom
  • Writes content for AFF blog, news room articles and various marketing materials
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree communications, marketing, or a related field from an accredited college or university in communications, public relations, public affairs, or a related field, and more than five year’s experience required.

Required specific experience:

  • Demonstrated success in building online communities and successfully utilizing

social media tools to advance an organization’s mission

  • Development of metrics-based social media communications plans
  • Successful track record in pitching media and engaging online media, bloggers,

and the public in advocacy campaigns

  • Hands-on knowledge of SEO, SMO, user-generated content, on-line newswires,

social bookmarking, blogs, microblogs, forums, video sharing, podcasting, and e-
mail distribution techniques

  • Experience in developing successful social marketing campaigns that promote

ideas and values as opposed to products

  • Ability to think strategically and work in a team environment
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group constituents and age groups
  • Conservation and/or environmental education experience preferred.

Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business correspondence, and grant guidelines. Ability to write routine business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, customers, and the general public.


Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient on an IBM-PC using Microsoft Office, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and various social networking platforms and internet search engines. Experience with database applications required.
