Extension Specialist -- 4-H Youth Development
Environmental & Natural Resources
Mission: The OSU Department of Forestry discovers and disseminates knowledge of forest ecosystems and their management to meet the needs and values of society, and to sustain their function, diversity, and productivity.
Description: This is a full-time, eleven-month, tenure-track position, with a 100% extension appointment in the Department of Forestry, Oklahoma State University.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide state-wide leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development programming in environmental and natural resources education, including camping and outdoor and leisure education; serve on DASNR Second Century Natural Resources and 4-H teams; and provide leadership for the Second Century Initiative 4-H Environmental Education Impact Team.
2. Develop comprehensive, research-based youth development program with emphasis on programs such as environmental stewardship, shooting sports, camping and outdoor education. This includes needs assessment, program design and a strong defined area of scholarship whereby program results and delivery methods are formally evaluated and results reported to the Extension system, stakeholders and funding agencies through professional organizations and refereed publications.
3. Develop collaborative working relationships with extension specialists and other faculty in the Department of Forestry, faculty in other Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (DASNR) departments, and with the state 4-H faculty and staff in order to strengthen the 4-H environmental and natural resources education program through various 4-H activities and events.
4. Maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators and faculty in the DASNR, and with OCES district staff and extension educators. Coordinate with the OCES Assistant Director of 4-H Youth Development in development and delivery of 4-H youth programs.
5. Participate in appropriate national, regional, and state professional organizations and maintain cooperative relationship with related agencies to further the mission of OSU, the DASNR, and the OCES.
Performance
Expectations:
1. Develop and maintain a current and comprehensive knowledge base in environmental and natural resources education. Study, analyze, interpret, and compile factual information, demographic data, policy information, scientific findings, and state and national trends. Extend knowledge base by engaging in scholarly activities and disseminating scientifically-based information and conducting in-depth targeted programs. Develop instructional learning packages, 4-H project materials, and provide information via mass media, 4-H Roundup, district conferences and state leadership development conferences, disseminate scientifically based information through qualitative and quantitative assessment of program needs and assessing behavioral outcomes and the effectiveness of instructional delivery systems. As appropriate, present papers at professional meetings. Share program impacts through articles in refereed journals. Provide information via mass media. Provide in-service education and support to extension educators. Oversee the development and updating of the 4-H environmental and natural resources education section of the web-site and strategic plan.
2. Generate external grants and contracts to support extension program and research.
3. Provide leadership for the Natural Resources Second Century Initiative 4-H Impact Program team.
4. Comply with OSU and OCES policies, procedures and guidelines related to civil rights, affirmative action and equal employment.
5. Maintain an updated and approved plan of work. Provide leadership for programs related to specific topics and audiences noted in the plan of work. Assist extension educators in the development and implementation of their plans of work and county events related to environmental education;
6. Provide in-service education for extension educators and 4-H volunteers.
7. Meet qualifications and performance expectations of appropriate faculty rank (i.e. Assistant Professor) as described in the Guidelines for Promotion and Tenure used by the Department of Forestry.
Qualifications:
1. Earned Doctorate required in natural resources or closely related area.
2. Ability to interpret research and technical information in areas of environmental and natural resources education.
3. Evidence of ability to communicate orally and in writing and to work effectively with state agencies, the academic community, extension professionals, and the public.
4. Experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating youth development programs in environmental and natural resources education is preferred.
5. Ability to prepare grant proposals and administer grants and contracts.
6. Cooperative Extension and teaching experience is desirable.
The position will be filled by February 28, 2006, or as soon thereafter as a qualified candidate is available. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
