Assistant Professor

Forest Resources Management -- Economics

Mission: The OSU Department of Forestry discovers and disseminates knowledge of forest ecosystems and their management to meet the needs and values of society, and to sustain their function, diversity, and productivity.

Description: This is a full-time, eleven-month, tenure-track position, approximately 60% research and 40% teaching. The research appointment is in the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES) and the instructional appointment is in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. This position reports directly to the Head of the Department of Forestry.

Responsibilities: Conduct research in and teach forest resources management-economics in cooperation with the Forestry faculty and other natural resource professionals. Department support will be provided in a collaborative research and teaching environment. The individual is expected to participate in collaborative activities with appropriate OAES Second Century Initiative Teams such as 21st Century Plant Enterprises (alternative management systems for improved profitability), Natural Resources -- Quality and Management (development of environmentally sensitive and economically feasible practices), 21st Century Biological Technologies (business models to capitalize on advances in bioscience), and Economically Strong and Empowered Communities (strategic planning, business retention and growth, value-added products, recreation and tourism). Working relationships with other University units and professionals within the region and the nation is strongly encouraged. Oklahoma State University also has a long history of encouraging and supporting international activities.

1. Establish a nationally recognized externally funded research program in the general area of natural resource management-economics, responsive to the needs of the State of Oklahoma and the region, and in cooperation with Forestry faculty and other natural resource professionals. Desirable areas of research include, but are not limited to, applications of economics and management science to forest and natural resource issues such as non-industrial private forests, ecosystem management, conservation, restoration and sustainability, rural development, valuing forest amenities, environmental quality, and timber production.

2. Teach two undergraduate courses in the area of forest resource management-economics. Course responsibilities will probably be natural resource management and forest economics, depending on the training and interests of the successful candidate and the interests and needs of the Department.

3. Advise and mentor undergraduate students.

4. Recruit, mentor and train graduate students.

5. Serve on Departmental, Division and University committees appropriate to interests, responsibilities, and organizational mission.

6. Prepare annual goals and objectives, and participate in the yearly appraisal and development process.

Qualifications:

1. A Ph.D. in forest resource management-economics or closely related field. A B.S. degree in forestry preferred, with at least one degree in forestry required.

2. Demonstrated ability and strong interest in instruction and advisement of undergraduate students.

3. Ability and desire to work closely and cooperatively with the Forestry faculty and other natural resources professionals to develop and maintain an active research program, to include publishing in leading scientific journals, and demonstrated interest and ability to seek and secure extramural funding to support research.

4. Ability and desire to work closely and cooperatively with the Forestry faculty and other natural resources professionals to deliver quality educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.

Employment Conditions:  The position will be filled by February 28, 2006, or as soon thereafter as a qualified candidate is available. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
