DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a 12-month tenure-track position and will be 40 % research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 60% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service)  available in the North Florida Research and Education Center, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida.  This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the School of Forest Resources and Conservation.  The incumbent will work mainly with the non-industrial, public and private forest land managers of northern Florida on silviculture problems and issues. 

Extension: The incumbent in this position will provide leadership and direct assistance to county faculty in carrying out effective extension education programs with emphasis on the north Florida area, but assisting in statewide programs where appropriate.  The incumbent will develop county faculty in-service training programs, participate in forestry state major programs, cooperate in other forestry-related extension programs such as economics and precision technology, author electronic (EDIS)  and hardcopy educational materials, author and contribute to newsletters, carry out on-farm demonstration trials and lead planning and reporting efforts in forestry extension for northern Florida.

Research: The incumbent in this position will be expected to conduct original research addressing the needs of the private and public, non-industrial forest land managers of northern Florida.  Research will focus on silviculture problems and issues important to forest management.  Possibilities include 1.) Managing for multiple resource uses (create new value-added forest products, specialty wood products, pine straw, wildlife habitat, hunting leases, etc.), 2.) managing  nutrients by use of fertilizers and competition control, intercropping with forage crops for livestock or hay, etc..

The incumbent will participate in graduate education, chair graduate committees, and supervise thesis and dissertation research.   The incumbent will actively seek contract and grant funding to support his/her program. 

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. in Forestry or a closely related area is required.  Postdoctoral experience is desirable.  Candidate should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships and in procurement of extramural funding.  Candidate must be supportive of the mission of the land-grant system.

           

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The University of Florida is a land-grant institution, encompassing virtually all academic and professional disciplines, with an enrollment of more than 46,000 students. The North Florida Research and Education (NFREC, http://nfrec.ifas.ufl.edu ) is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida and has diverse research and extension education programs.   NFREC is comprised of three centers with over 2500 acres.  Faculty members (23) are located at two of the centers.  The School of Forest Resources and Conservation ( has 20 faculty in Gainesville and four in out-state research and education centers.  The School faculty are enriched by 32 affiliate and courtesy faculty who actively collaborate with the resident faculty.  This position will be housed at NFREC, Quincy which is located 20 miles west of Tallahassee, FL just off of Interstate 10, and has new office and laboratory facilities.
