Position Specification
The Dean of the College of Natural Resources (CNR) is the chief academic, administrative, and budgetary officer of the college and reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
The dean must be a creative and innovative leader who understands domestic and international natural resources issues in the broadest sense. The dean should have a strong commitment to student achievement and faculty scholarship, with effective interpersonal skills, and possess the drive to move the college forward nationally and internationally. The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- Excellence in leadership and administration, with experience gained through leadership of a large academic unit or similar organization (preferred)
- A distinguished record in research, teaching, and service
- Support of cultural and ethnic diversity that indicates the ability to recruit and lead a diverse student body, faculty and staff
- A readiness to provide intellectual leadership for a faculty actively involved in teaching, research, extension, and continuing education
- Open and effective communication skills that provides clarity in budgeting and decision-making
- A record of originality and leadership in fostering interdisciplinary programs within and across colleges
- An ability to represent the diverse programs and interests of the c ollege persuasively to both internal and external constituencies
- Experience with fiscal and personnel requirements of large programs
- Significant experience in fundraising and the development of external funding sources
Candidates records should provide evidence of strong abilities to work effectively and collaboratively with the faculty of the college, the university administration, and other constituent groups and partners both within and outside the university. Candidates should possess the terminal degree in their field and should be qualified for appointment as full professor with tenure in one of the departments of the colleges.
The College of Natural Resources
The c ollege offers programs for study that lead to baccalaureate and advanced degrees in three departments: Forestry & Environmental Resources; Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management; and Wood & Paper Science. The c ollege also offers courses in these disciplines to students in other undergraduate degree programs. The faculty is welcoming and involved in the education of their students. Approximately 1150 students (83% undergraduate and 17% graduate) are enrolled in 10 B.S, 14 Masters, and 5 Ph. D. programs.
The college is recognized for the scholarly quality of its teaching and dedication to the classroom, excellence in the research of its faculty, its active interdisciplinary programs, and its very successful extension programs. Faculty, staff and students work together with business, industry, government, and other organizations to address a wide range of challenges facing our state and the world. These partnerships facilitate research and discovery; teaching and learning; and outreach and service.
The college has 70 tenured and tenure track faculty and 200 total faculty and staff members in the three academic departments. Externally sponsored programs totaled $7.5 million in 2004-05 for the college, and its endowment is valued at $60 million.
NC State University
NC State University is a national center for teaching, research, and extension in the sciences and engineering, in the humanities and social sciences, and in a range of professional programs. Recognized as one of the nations leading universities in science and technology, NC State University is ranked 9th among national research universities in industry-funded research, 2nd in total state and local research funding among national research universities, 2nd in total research expenditures in the University of North Carolina system, and 19 th among public universities. NC State Universitys expenditures for research and sponsored programs exceed $290 million. The University hosts more than 60 interdisciplinary research centers. In 2003-2004, income from royalties totaled more than $4.2 million.
The main campus of the University is located two miles west of the downtown area of Raleigh, North Carolinas capital city. The Universitys unique research park, Centennial Campus, hosts more than 100 companies and agencies and creates an advanced technology community where university, industry and government partners produce scientific and technical innovations. The main campus, along with the Centennial Campus and the College of Veterinary Medicine, consists of 210 major buildings on more than 2,100 acres. Nearby are research farms; biology and ecology sites; the JC Raulston Arboretum; forests; and the Carter-Finley Stadium and the RBC Center that together constitute 3,200 acres.
NC State is currently in a capital construction program of over $800 million resulting in a new Undergraduate Science Teaching Laboratory and soon to move the College of Engineering to Centennial Campus, along with repair and renovation of buildings across the main campus.
NC State University is one of the three Research Triangle universities, along with Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, that surround the 6,700-acre Research Triangle Park (RTP). Since its inception in 1958, the Park has become home to numerous public research agencies and the private research centers of national and international corporations. The RTP has become the largest planned research and development park in the U.S. with 140 research organizations, an investment of more than $2 billion in capital improvements, and an employee base of more than 50,000 employees. The three universities cooperate through the Board of Governors of the Research Triangle Institute, the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina, the North Carolina Supercomputer Facility, and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. Their shared facilities include the Triangle Research Libraries Network, the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, and the new Triangle Universities Licensing Consortium.
