Job Description
The Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program, San Luis Obispo County, is seeking a highly motivated Oak Education Outreach Specialist to develop and deliver an educational program in oak woodland management for landowners in San Luis Obispo County. The objective is to promote and facilitate voluntary oak conservation and restoration. The education program will be aimed primarily at the owners and managers of the counties 350,000 acres of oak woodlands. This position is funded by a grant from the Oak Woodland Conservation Act of 2001. Stationed in San Luis Obispo, CA, or vicinity. Temporary (appx. 3 years (2006 to 2008); 50% time (20 hrs/week). Skills and Competencies
This job requires the ability to develop\xe2\x80\x95and/or adopt existing\xe2\x80\x95educational information about oak woodland management and to communicate this information effectively through various media, including field meetings, Extension publications, newsletters, press releases, poster displays, power point presentations, and web sites.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to develop excellent working relationships with ranchers/private landowners
- Experience with computer word processing and publishing software
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills
- Proven ability to work independently
- Report/publication preparation experience
- A four-year or higher college degree is preferred and courses or other experience in most of the following are desirable:
Writing
Public speaking
Natural Resources/Oak Woodland management
Biology—wildlife, botany, forestry, range
Photography
Cattle ranching/Agriculture
Specific Responsibilities
- Organize and conduct approximately monthly Tailgate Meetings and workshops on various oak woodland management and restoration topics. Meetings will be held at a ranch or farm with a rancher/grower who will share his/her success with a given practice. Where appropriate, meeting material may be translated into Spanish.
- Develop educational materials for field demonstrations and educational meetings. Materials will highlight rancher/grower experiences with oak woodland management in the form of grower testimonials, fact sheets, or other relevant materials
- Develop and distribute quarterly newsletter. Newsletters contain pertinent and timely information on practices, meetings, events, and grower testimonials. (Deliverables: 4
Newsletters per year)
- Develop website or update the IHRMP/CC website. Newsletters, handouts, brochures, and fact sheets will be posted on the website
- Attend monthly Native Tree Committee of San Luis Obispo County meetings
