The Specialist is responsible for providing expertise to develop research based educational resources and implement educational outreach programs on a statewide basis related to urban forestry, wildlife and natural resource management. He/she must have in-depth knowledge of environmental and ecological concepts and best practice for land and water conservation and waste management. He/she understands, can communicate and offer practical educational solutions to current and emerging environmental issues including pollution and pollution control, hazardous waste management, the law as it relates to environmental justice, public policies, greenspace development, urban environmental systems, and urban/rural interface environmental management. He/she provides leadership and support with implementing an annual Urban/Rural Interface Conference. He/she understands the impact of urban communities on land, water, air and wildlife; and plans and implements relevant programs and activities to prepare citizens to respond appropriately to a variety of environmental situations. He/she understands relationships and concepts related to the social, psychological benefits of environmental greenspace, the human dimensions of urban forestry, and people-tree-interactions. He/she is also knowledgeable of environmental management and understands the use of hazardous products, their relationship to health and their impact on the external environment. The specialist pursues external funding and uses research based information and state-of-the-art resources to prepare and deliver presentations and educational materials. He/she develops publications, curricular, media releases and other educational resources; develops and distributes bulletins, pamphlets, fact sheets and newsletters and delivers in service trainings to support the needs of Extension agents. He/she provides assistance to other specialists and statewide faculty; and establishes collaborations formal partnerships and multi-state agreements with other Extension Systems, agencies and organizations to incorporate environmental training into programs and services. He/she develops reports and evaluations to document program impacts.

A doctorate degree in Environmental Sciences or related forestry and wildlife agricultural disciplines is required. Extension experience and/or training and good communication skills are highly desirable. A record of research and public service is also desirable. Ability to travel and work flexible hours including evenings and weekends is required to fulfill assigned responsibilities. Applicant must have a demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for working with urban, new and nontraditional audiences to deliver new and innovative programs. Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team, communicate effectively orally and in writing, work with diverse groups, manage time and resources, exhibit computer and media skills, show initiative and work with minimum supervision in various settings. Must be able to implement and evaluate impact driven programming, with an understanding of sociological impacts, and exhibit leadership and people skills.
