Rural-Urban Interface Forester Position Opening, Ohio Division of Forestry

The Ohio Division of Forestry recently posted an opening for a Rural-Urban Interface Forester. This is a full-time, two-year position.

Essential Job Functions:  provide technical forestry assistance in rural-urban interface issues, reforestation, forest management, timber marketing, watershed protection, insect and disease control, recreational facility and wildlife habitat development, etc.; develop a coordinated approach to sustain forest benefits and services at all levels of ownership; coordinate land-use planning efforts in support of sustainable forestry; develop a program to educate the public about sustaining forest benefits in urbanizing areas; represent the Division of Forestry in an informational and liaison capacity; work with a variety of land management agencies and organizations, such as regional planning commissions, county commissioners, and non-government organizations; organize and hold rural-urban interface workshops; facilitate coordinated management between private forest owners and local parks; perform wildfire support as needed and able; aid in grant implementation, inspect and evaluate grants and processes, and inform community of other grant opportunities; develop accurate news releases; research and analyze current information to keep management informed of trends, problems, and progress; respond to public correspondence; use web pages, displays, and publications to promote sustaining resources in the rural-urban interface; and perform administrative tasks, such as coordinating special projects, aiding in budget preparation, and using computer software for reports, publications, and planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. the completion of undergraduate core coursework in forestry or related field OR a year of experience as a Forestry technician

2. a year of training and/or experience in public relations

3. a year of training and/or experience in computer software programs

4. valid driver's license

 5. working knowledge of budgeting, safety practices (as detailed in the Division of Forestry Health & Safety Manual) , public relations, agency policies and procedures, government structure and process, and law 

6. skilled in word processing, general equipment operations, forestry instruments (prism, GPS, Biltmore stick, etc.), and wildland firefighting

7. deal with many variables & determine specific action, calculate fractions, decimals & percentages, prepare & deliver speeches before specialized audiences & general public, handle sensitive inquiries from & contacts with officials & general public, demonstrate strength to lift up to 50 lbs.
