Assistant Professor of Silviculture
The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) (www.uamont.edu/jobs) School of Forest Resources and the Arkansas Forest Resources Center (www.afrc.uamont.edu) seek to fill a faculty position in silviculture. Arkansas, known as “The Natural State", features approximately 18 million acres of forests, with about 7 million acres of upland hardwood forests, about 3 million acres of mixed pine-hardwood forests, about 3 million acres of bottomland hardwood forests, and about 5 million acres of pine forests (plantation and natural combined). The School of Forest Resources, located in the rural setting of southeast Arkansas, is home to undergraduate programs in forestry, wildlife management, spatial information systems, and land surveying, and an M.S. level graduate program.
Responsibilities: The appointment is approximately 60% research (Arkansas Agriculture Experiment Station) and 40% teaching (University of Arkansas at Monticello). Research interests may focus on pine, upland hardwood, bottomland hardwood and/or mixed pine-hardwood forests with the expectation to excel in at least one of these forest communities and assist research in other communities. Teaching will include an undergraduate silviculture course, a graduate silviculture course, and related course(s) in support of the program. The position also entails extension/outreach to landowners/stakeholders in support of the land grant mission of the Arkansas Forest Resources Center. The nontenure-track, 12-month position will carry the rank of assistant professor.
Qualifications: The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in silviculture or forest ecology and must be eligible to work in the United States. Practical experience and a strong background in ecology are desired, as is expertise in at least one of the forest communities of Arkansas. The ability to relate to colleagues, clients, and the public is required, as is an ability to generate grant funds for research and outreach activities.
