Position: Cooperative Extension Specialist in Forest Management, 11-month, career-track, in
the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, University of California,
Berkeley, available July 1, 2006.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in forest management or closely related field with a proven
record of accomplishment in problem-solving research and effective outreach in forest and
natural resource management. Demonstrated professional understanding and interest in a broad
range of natural resource fields related to forest and hardwood rangeland management.
Qualifications necessary to attain licensing as a Registered Professional Forester in the state of
California within three years of appointment. Ability to communicate technical ideas to both
technical and non-technical people, frequently at the same time.
Responsibilities: The Forest Management Specialist is a senior level position responsible for
developing a strong research and outreach program focused on sustainable management of
Californias forest and woodland resources. The setting for the management of forests and
rangelands in California is complex, one where both ecological and socio-political factors
significantly influences management practices. The Forest Management Specialist is in a key
position to bring about growth and development of natural resource management in California.
Given the diverse mix of goods and services provided by the states forests and woodlands, it is
essential that the successful applicant demonstrate the capacity to build a broad and inclusive
program that considers the impact of forest management on soil, water, wildlife, range, wood
products, and recreation. Through education and applied research, the Forest Management
Specialist serves a diverse clientele that includes professional resource managers, private
industrial and nonindustrial forest and rangeland owners and managers, timber operators, public
and private natural resource organizations, policy makers, and individuals concerned with natural
resource management.
The specialist will be located on the Berkeley campus of the University of California, and
will be expected to interact closely with the campus-based individuals working in forestry, but
would also be expected to be involved in research and outreach programs statewide. The
specialist will be a member of the Ecosystem Science Division of the Department of
Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. The Specialist may request an appointment as
Adjunct Professor that will allow the supervision of graduate students.
