OTHER INFORMATION: Half of Florida (15 million acres) is covered in diverse forest ecosystems and they contributed over $16 billion per year to the State's economy. Water quality and quantity issues have become increasingly important in Florida and elsewhere in the southeastern USA. Forested landscapes and wetlands play a critical role in aquifer recharge and fresh water, marine and estuarine ecology. The forest, agricultural and marine industries in Florida, including recreation and tourism, are significantly impacted by forest hydrologic cycles. Acknowledging the importance of water quality and quantity, the state created Water Management Districts (WMD) to better manage Florida's water resources. The WMD's and other state agencies now manage nearly three million acres of land. In addition, the Division of Forestry administers the state's forestry Best Management Practices (BMP) program -- an applied science program to protect forest water resources, which is evolving as new scientific information and technology becomes available. Research opportunities exist for ensuring that the BMPs are effective and for improving practices associated with emerging forest/water issues.
