Forest Management Modeling and Guideline Development

The University of Minnesota seeks a researcher and project manager to participate in and lead a multi-agency effort to develop web based forest management guidelines for a wide range of users and management objectives. The position will be located in the Department of Forest Resources on the University's St. Paul Campus.

POSITION: Forest Management Modeling and Guideline Development

 

APPOINTMENT: Research Fellow or Research Associate, full time, annually renewable based on performance and the availability of funding.  Current funding is for one year; $35,000-$45,000 annually commensurate with experience.  Available September 19, 2005.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist senior scientists from several agencies in research on developing web based forest management guidelines and associated models, and including management of project team efforts, synthesis of guidelines and recommendations in web format, forest resource analysis, modeling, photography of forest conditions and silvicultural practices, project communications and publication.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Required background: M.S. in forestry or closely related field for the Research Fellow level; Ph.D. for the Research Associate level.

$Coursework, training and/or experience with forest ecology and silvicultural practices, forest management and associated modeling, and forest resource inventory data analysis.

$Understanding of website development and experience in developing site materials

$Strong technical and landowner audience writing skills.

$Skill in developing and using spreadsheet models.

$Ability to work with and manage project team.

$Ability to design and communicate guidelines, recommendations, and research in web and traditional formats

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

$Experience with Great Lakes Region forests and their management.

$GIS application programming (e.g., ARCINFO/ARCVIEW, ERDAS IMAGINE).

$Computer programming skill including internet programming.
