Position: Urban and community forestry. Qualifications:
Terminal degree required, with preferably onedegree in forest resources. Education and/or experience in quantitativecommunity forest management, tree sustainability in urbanizedlandscapes, or urban forest ecology. Strong record of computer-basedand verbal communication skills. Proven teaching ability amoung manyaudience types. Excellent record of technical and applied researchintegration and synthesis skills. Current professional urban forestmanagement and arboriculture credentials preferred. All currentlicenses and permits needed for all-season and all-hour automobile userequired.

Responsibilities:
Successful candidate will be responsible forcreating and sustaining an aggressive service program within thesubject area of community forest management to improve the quality oflife of Georgia citizens and improve the value and quality of theirnatural resources. Service responsibilities include, but are notlimited to:
  • Develop awareness building, training, and educational eventsusing distance learning technologies, internet, conferences, meetings,and classroom instruction.
  • ­ Must incorporate innovative distance learning educationtechnologies into educational programming.
  • Production of audience-appropriate materials in support of theeducational program is essential.
  • Support of the Cooperative Extension Service County AgentUrban/Rural Interface Faculty.
  • Cooperate in developing and providing educational products andservices with a variety of local, regional, and statewide communityforest resources groups and organizations.
  • Develop applied research projects as needed to address resourceuse issues.
  • Participate in service and faculty activities of the School ofForest Resources.
  • Serve in an advisory capacity to individuals, companies, andorganizations regarding community forest resources statewide.
  • Travel across Georgia in furtherance of this educational program.
  • Be capable of working in the field to establish demonstrationsand guided lectures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
The University: The University of Georgia is a land grant / seagrant institution comprised of 15 schools and colleges. Enrollment isapproximately 34,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professionalstudents. The Daniel B. Warnell School of Forest Resources is aprofessional school with 64 faculty, 240 upper division undergraduates,and 150 graduate students. The School offers Bachelor of Sciencedegrees with majors in forestry, wildlife, fisheries, and forestenvironmental resources. Graduate degrees include the Master of ForestResources, the Master of Science, and the Doctor of Philosophy. TheSchool maintains a 740-acre research forest, 340-acre experimentalforest and arboretum, and 23,000 acres of forest land across the statefor service, teaching, and research. The School provides a nationallyrecognized forest resources service program to citizens andorganizations across the state and around the globe through a varietyof innovative educational products and services.

The University of Georgia at the Gwinnett University Center(headquarters for this position) is located in Lawrenceville, GA.(Northeast side of Atlanta metropolitan area). This campus is sharedwith Georgia Perimeter College and Georgia State University. TheGwinnett University Center currently occupies three buildings with twomore buildings to be completed in 1/02 and 9/02. TheAtlanta metropolitan area provides an immense and diverse educationallaboratory. The Thompson Mills Experimental Forest and State Arboretumis located nearby and is available for educational use.
