Position Summary
The Department of Environment and Society at Utah State University (USU), in association with the Vice Presidents Office for Extension, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Sustainable Living.
This is a tenure-track, full-time (12-month) appointment based at the main campus in Logan. Assignment of effort will be 75% for Extension and associated scholarship/creative activity and 25% for teaching. The position is currently open and should be filled no later than August 2007.
Sustainable Living broadly refers to the theory and practice of making choices that enable people to lead lives that are fulfilling, productive, and environmentally responsible. It involves promotion of an informed citizenry, healthy ecosystems, and enhanced efficiency in the use of scarce natural resources. The main focus area that is highly desired for this position is energy conservation. Ancillary focus areas can include water conservation, socio-economic aspects of green technology, green consumerism, sustainable landscapes, etc.

Area and Community: The main campus of USU is in Logan, a community of 50,000 inhabitants, located 80 miles north of Salt Lake City. It is situated in the beautiful Cache Valley, a largely agricultural landscape surrounded by mountains that offers easy access to ski resorts, lakes, rivers, and public lands making it one of the finest outdoor-recreation locales anywhere. Responsibilities: The core of the position will be representing USU Extension and working with a statewide Extension faculty, private individuals, communities, NGOs, and government to create and deliver innovative, science-based outreach programs dealing with Sustainable Living themes throughout the State of Utah. Approaches would include one-on-one interactions as well as participation in in-service training, seminars, workshops, and conferences, and giving service to relevant governing boards or bodies. Regular reporting of Extension activities is required. Such duties are commensurate with the land-grant mission of USU. Responsibilities will also include directorship of the Utah House, a model residential facility where conservation technology and practice is demonstrated (http://www.extension.usu.edu/cooperative/utahhouse/); as well as providing leadership oversight for the Utah Bioneers Conference, an annual gathering for stakeholders concerned with promoting a sustainable society (http://www.extension .usu.edu/bioneers/). The successful candidate will be a faculty member in the Department of Environment and Society (EnvS). Teaching will include offering one course per year at the graduate and/or undergraduate level at the USU-Logan campus dealing with theory and practice of Sustainable Living.
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have an earned doctorate or other terminal degree in a field related to the natural environment and human behavior. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to education and must be able to generate external funds to help support their Extension and scholarly/creative activities. The EnvS department is especially interested in applicants who will contribute interdisciplinary expertise and are able to work collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience or aptitude in delivering distance education is highly desirable.
