Publication Exterior Wood in the South: Selection, Applications, and Finishes
Wood continues to play an important role as a structural material in today's high-tech society. As lumber and in reconstituted products, wood is commonly used for house siding, trim, decks, fences, and countless other exterior and interior applications. When wood is exposed to the elements, particularly sunlight and moisture, special precautions must be taken in structural design as well as in the selection and application of the finish. This is especially true in the South, where excessive moisture can quickly damage a structure and erode the finish. This report describes the characteristics of wood finishes and their proper application to solid and reconstituted wood products. It describes how manufacturing and construction practices affect the surfaces of wood products, how various types of finishes interact with the surface, and how weathering affects the finished surfaces. Methods for selecting and applying various exterior wood finishes are presented. Finally, the failure and discoloration of wood finishes are discussed, and methods are described for preventing these problems. The information and advice given in this report provide a guide for obtaining maximum service life for finished exterior wood products in the South.

Publication Predicting Bending Strength of Fire-Retardant-Treated Plywood From Screw-Withdrawal Tests
This report describes the development of a test method and predictive model- to estimate the residual bending strength of fire-retardant treated plywood roof sheathing from measurement of screw-withdrawal force. The preferred test methodology is described in detail. Models were developed to predict loss in mean and lower prediction bounds for plywood bending strength as a function of a screw-withdrawal force. Our analysis of fire-retardant-treated plywood from three different studies, each with various fire-retardant-treatment, processing, plywood thickness, and exposure temperature groupings, clearly indicated that different fire-retardant-treatments and plywood thicknesses could not be grouped into a single "universal" model. Nevertheless, some grouping was possible; parameter estimates for several grouped fire-retardant formulations and plywood thicknesses are reported for mean trends and lower prediction boundaries. Although the models were shown to acceptably predict plywood bending strength, additional work is needed to expand these models to address the effects of plywood quality, wood temperature, and moisture content at time of test.

Publication Urban Forestry for Florida Communities
Almost all Florida towns and cities are blessed with trees in parks, on public grounds and along streets. The question is how can YOUR community take better care of its "urban forest" at a reasonable cost? Many of Floridas larger cities have a forestry department to handle tree management activities -planting, tree trimming, maintenance and tree removal. These cities recognize that urban tree management URBAN FORESTRY - is important. Our smaller, more rural communities recognize tree values, too, but few have an on-going forestry program. Smaller communities are usually technically and financially unable to do the level of tree management work they would like to do.
