Let's take a walk in your woods. What do you see? A few scattered spindly pines, thickets of maple sprouts, some crooked and rotten oaks and hickories, a little patch of pine saplings too thick to grow, a few broken and damaged trees of many kinds, grapevines climbing into a few trees, honeysuckle and kudzu crawling over some of the others . . . . perhaps some nice dogwood, sassafras, and sourwood trees, a young vigorous red oak here and there, and maybe even an area with some nice big pine, yellow-poplar, or oak trees? If so, then your woodlands qualify as part of more than 35 million acres of understocked, cutover, low-quality, mixed pine-hardwood forestland in the oak-pine region of the South. Now let's inspect your woodlands more carefully. Is there any chance of selling some of the wood in this forest? Maybe firewood? Are you satisfied with the wildlife living there? Is it an enjoyable place to take a walk? Do you like what you see? Would you like to make this forest more productive for timber and wildlife and recreation? Without spending much money? Maybe even make some money in the long run? Do you want to improve the quality of your forestland? Do you want to do some of the work yourself? Then this bulletin is for you.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>Publication</dc:type>

Enormous quantities of biomass are being generated from thinning operations, land clearing, and hurricane disasters. These issues drive the need to create solutions for using low-value and waste wood. The conference will include an international slate of speakers, including researchers, material and equipment suppliers, manufacturers, and end-users. Smallwood 2006 will feature technical and poster presentations, discussions, and tabletop displays. The conference will also include tours on Thursday, May 18, in the surrounding Richmond area of mill sites, biomass energy facilities, and small forest products businesses, a state-of-the-art small log sawmill, and related forest products businesses. To some, hardwood management is a confusing and difficult concept to grasp.Unfortunately, past harvests in many hardwood stands removed only the best quality stems ofa few select species, leaving poor quality often less desirable species in the wake. Because ofpast practices in many hardwood stands, some may not believe that hardwood forests can beproperly managed for pulp, lumber, water quality, aesthetics, wildlife habitat, and a host ofother amenities. We hope this publication will serve to expand the private forest landowners'horizon to the possibilities of hardwood management. We have assembled chapters on thevarious hardwood forest types found across the South. Other chapters address managementpractices designed to regenerate and maintain stand and site quality, plus many otherbenefits. As more demands are placed on hardwood resources, chapters 18 and 19, whichdeal with water management regulations and wildlife considerations, will be of special interestto many landowners. Incentive programs such as the Conservation Reserve Program, andForest Stewardship, have great promise in advancing the active management of hardwoodresources.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>Publication</dc:type>
