Family members included Dorothy Gunn of Waynesboro, Mississippi; Mary Alva and Bob Seymour of Leavenworth, Kansas; Anthony, Meredith, Amelia, and Alice Lang of Lawrence, Kansas; and Jackie and Harry Haney of Austin, Texas.

 Forest Landowner Champion

The Forest Landowners Association is pleased to announce Plum Creek as the recipient of the 2010 Forest Landowner Champion award. The Forest Landowner Champion Award is given to an entity, either for-profit or not-for-profit, that has made a significant contribution to the private forest landowner community through research, legislative, or regulatory efforts at the local or national level. The association created the award this year, and Plum Creek is its first recipient. The award is not necessarily given every year, only when an outstanding candidate is nominated. Nominations are allowed only from the FLA Board of Directors.

As the largest private owner of forestland in the U.S., Plum Creek was selected by FLA’s Awards Committee to receive this recognition due in part to their outstanding efforts advocating on behalf of private forest landowners in Washington DC. CEO Rick Holley accepted the award on behalf of Plum Creek.

Scott Jones, CEO of FLA, noted, “As the largest private forest landowner, Plum Creek offers a unique perspective and leadership role from which all private forest landowners benefit. We appreciate their leadership, and in recognition for their work on behalf of landowners, it was our pleasure to honor Plum Creek as the 2010 Forest Landowner Champion.” Jones continued, "Now more than ever it is vital to have landowners’ voices heard in Washington DC and Plum Creek has added much needed resources to the debate and become a strategic partner to all private forest landowners."

Forest Landowner of the Year

The Forest Landowners Association is pleased to announce Ed Leigh McMillan II as the recipient of the Forest Landowner of the Year award. This award is given to an individual who promotes landownership with forestry expertise, and who is involved in the advocacy of landowner concerns.

After graduating from North Carolina State College where he studied forest management, McMillan continued his education, receiving a degree in finance from the University of Alabama in 1964. After graduation, he returned to his hometown of Brewton, Alabama, where he began work as the first forester for T. R. Miller Mill Company.

For over 40 years, McMillan served the company as Woodlands Manager, Vice President, Treasurer, Corporate Secretary, and a member of the Board of Directors. He also served as President and a member of the Board of Directors of Cedar Creek Land & Timber in Brewton, Alabama since its inception until he resigned in 2006. McMillan has been an active member of FLA for over 30 years, and is a Past President of the association. He is also a Past President of Neal Land & Timber Company in Blountstown, Florida.

McMillan is a true steward of our natural resources. He has a great love and respect for all natural resources: land, timber, wildlife, water, and minerals. From an early age, he was schooled to husband and preserve the land; it is a lesson he has practiced and undertakes to pass on to future generations at every opportunity.

Young Forest Landowner of the Year

The Forest Landowners Association is pleased to announce Tom McMillan III as the recipient of the Young Forest Landowner of the Year award. This award is given to an individual under the age of 50 who is a landowner or someone who works in a family business with land, and is actively involved in the management of the forestland and in their local community.

McMillan is a commercial developer in Charlotte, North Carolina and owns forestland in Chesterfield County, South Carolina and Wake County, North Carolina. McMillan has “an excellent land stewardship, including multi-resources management for timber production, aesthetics, and recreation, and is respected by his peers,” noted Derek Dougherty, recipient of the Young Forest Landowner of the Year award in 2009, who nominated McMillan for the award.

Originally from Brewton, Alabama, McMillan serves on the board of Cedar Creek Land & Timber in Brewton. McMillan also serves on the Board of Directors for FLA, and has been very active, organizing a landowner meeting last year in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Extension Forester of the Year

The Forest Landowners Association is pleased to announce Dr. Stephen Dicke as the recipient of the Extension Forester of the Year award. This award recognizes an extension forester for exceptional contributions to forest landowner education and outreach.
Dicke is an extension forester with Mississippi State University. “His commitment to private forest landowners of not only Mississippi, but the entire Western Gulf region, is exemplary,” noted Andrew Londo, Professor and Extension Forestry Coordinator at Mississippi State University. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Dicke led an educational effort to assist landowners with determining the casualty losses they sustained, develop management and recovery strategies, and assisted with urban tree losses along the Mississippi Coast. Through these efforts, Dicke helped organize 40 programs for over 2,400 participants.

Over the last four years, Dicke has conducted 297 programs for 12,000 participants who represent more than 2.4 million acres of forestland. He has also authored or co-authored 49 publications and secured almost $1.5 million in outside funds.

A certified arborist and tree farm inspector, Dicke is a member of the National Arbor Day Foundation, International Society of Aboriculture, Society of American Foresters, Hinds County Forestry Association, and Mississippi Forestry Association. He is also active with the Boy Scouts of America.

Corporate Member

Corporate Membership allows companies that may not necessarily own land, but still want to support the association, to join.  Although FLA is primarily supported at the grassroots level by private landowners, the investment at the corporate level helps support landowners, enhance programs, and be more effective advocates for private landowners.

The Forest Landowners Association is pleased to announce the 2010 Corporate Member, Georgia-Pacific, LLC. Georgia-Pacific is one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of tissue, packaging, paper, pulp, and building products and related chemicals. The company employs more than 45,000 people at approximately 300 locations in North America, South America and Europe.
